Threnos is a marimba solo of calm, sustained character, unfolding as a continuous musical arc. The piece moves steadily forward, guided by a clear harmonic progression, while allowing space for rubato and agogic flexibility.
A free and open introduction establishes the sound world of the piece, followed by a more formally structured central section. The thematic material unfolds in clearly defined sections based on contrasting bass movements — from a gradually developing line in the low register to a simple, oscillating figure. This creates a sense of continuous motion within a reduced and transparent texture.
A contrasting section at the centre introduces a sudden shift in harmonic focus and energy, reducing the material to its essentials before gradually leading back to the original tonal area. The piece concludes with a quiet yet intense coda, characterised by sustained rolls across a wide register, requiring both control of sound and physical reach.
Throughout the work, the full range of the marimba is explored — from the lowest to the highest register — with an emphasis on long melodic lines, balanced harmonic writing, and a continuous sense of forward motion. Threnos is contemplative and lyrical in character, driven by an inner tension that carries the music toward its resolution.
