Still Moving is a solo work for vibraphone that explores a distinct approach to the instrument through the focused use of damping techniques and extended playing methods such as flageolet tones and mandolin tremolo. At the same time, the piece avoids any sense of effect for its own sake: these techniques consistently support the harmonic and melodic clarity of the music.
Calm, static passages frame a more animated central section, in which rhythmic motion and melodic flow come to the foreground. Within this section, a fixed harmonic progression opens into an improvisational passage. While the surrounding material is fully composed, this part offers greater interpretative freedom. A fully notated example improvisation is provided as an alternative.
Still Moving requires a refined sense of musical expression. Virtuosity and speed are not the focus; instead, emphasis is placed on the conscious shaping of sound, transitions, and resonance. Engaging with the techniques used in the piece opens up an expanded perspective on the instrument.
Relative difficulty

Selective damping of individual bars using the fingers of the playing hand to control resonance and voice separation.

Harmonic tone produced by lightly damping the bar at its nodal point while striking it with a second mallet.

Combined mandolin tremolo and harmonic technique, allowing the sound to shift gradually between overtone and fundamental.
