About

Perpetuum Mobile is an arrangement of Johann Strauss’ well-known miniature, reimagined for a large-scale percussion septet.

The piece is deliberately conceived on a broad scale and makes use of a wide range of instruments to translate the wit, momentum, and orchestral colour of the original into a purely percussive context.

The arrangement was commissioned by the percussion section of the Vienna Philharmonic and premiered as part of the intermission film “2025 – A Strauss Odyssey” at the New Year’s Concert 2025.

Despite its close relationship to the original, the arrangement introduces new elements and explores the sonic possibilities of a large percussion ensemble: lion’s roar, bird whistles, two cuckoos, a ghostly-sounding musical saw, and a harmonica adding a subtle “Oberkrainer” colour — among other details.
