España is an arrangement of Émile Waldteufel’s well-known waltz, conceived as a double-sided flip edition for percussion quartet (with optional castanet solo) and Large Percussion Ensemble (6–13 players).
The use of castanets adds a subtle regional colour and reflects the dance-like character of the original.
In the quartet version, the castanets are written as an exposed, performative solo part; the use of hand-held castanets is recommended for clear articulation and nuanced shaping. In the Large Percussion Ensemble version, the castanets are more integrated into the overall texture, and depending on the setup, mechanical castanets may also be used.
Both versions may be performed independently or combined, allowing flexible ensemble planning and the inclusion of players with different technical levels.
Instruments set in italics are optional.
The score for large percussion ensemble uses color coding to indicate the relative difficulty levels of the individual parts, supporting balanced ensemble planning.
These indicators are specific to the ensemble setting and should not be compared directly with difficulty levels in solo or duo repertoire.
