This three-piece collection explores the combination of vibraphone and marimba as a self-contained setup, in which melodic, harmonic, and bass functions are performed simultaneously.
The pieces are conceived specifically for this hybrid configuration, each focusing on a different relationship between the two instruments. Rather than merging their sound worlds, the music highlights their contrasting qualities and uses the physical space between them as a compositional parameter.
Improvisation also plays a central role: two of the three pieces include improvisational sections that, due to the hybrid setup, invite a renewed engagement with the instrument — even for experienced improvisers. Fully notated example improvisations are included in the appendix as an option for a fixed version.
The collection is conceived both as a concert work and as an exploration of extended performance practice, offering a distinctive approach to solo mallet playing — well suited to the instrument, challenging, and innovative.
