About

MA’RITA is a multifaceted solo vibraphone piece that moves between lyrical passages, jazz-influenced rhythms and more unconventional sound worlds. It opens with two striking, dissonant chords, whose resonance gives way to a gently arpeggiated harmonic progression. A calm melody unfolds above it, gradually gaining intensity before leading into a relaxed jazz waltz.

The flowing movement is soon interrupted by a scherzando section that ventures into atonal territory, becoming increasingly wild and unpredictable before reaching its climax in a series of dissonant chord clusters.

A return to the opening harmonic progression brings a quieter, more reflective atmosphere, which slowly builds towards the final section. Here, wave-like movements in the accompaniment provide a foundation for long, bell-like tones above. As the waves gradually subside and the bell tones fade, the music settles into a lingering soundscape. One of the opening dissonant chords returns in a transformed, softened form, before the piece finally resolves.

Dedicated to the composer’s mother, MA’RITA offers the performer considerable interpretative freedom, with expressive markings providing guidance while leaving room for an individual approach.
