About

España is an arrangement of Émile Waldteufel’s well-known waltz, conceived as a double-sided score for percussion quartet (with optional castanet solo) and large percussion ensemble (6–13 players).
The use of castanets adds a subtle regional colour, gently evoking the dance-like character and rhythmic elegance associated with the title.

In the smaller version, the castanets are written as a prominent solo part. The voice is intentionally exposed and performative in character, and the use of hand castanets is strongly recommended to allow for clear articulation and expressive shaping.

In the large ensemble version, the castanets are embedded within the percussion section and function as part of the overall rhythmic fabric. Depending on the ensemble setup, mechanical castanets may also be used in this version.

Both versions can be performed independently or combined within the same performance, allowing flexible ensemble planning and the inclusion of players with different technical levels.
