Johann Strauss II
Ein musikalischer Scherz
op. 257
Arrangement for
Percussion Septet
Leonhard Waltersdorfer
Perpetuum Mobile is an arrangement of Johann Strauss’ well-known miniature, reimagined for large percussion ensemble.
Scored for percussion septet, the piece is conceived on a deliberately expansive scale, using a wide range of instruments to translate Strauss’ wit, momentum, and orchestral color into a purely percussive context.
The arrangement was commissioned by the percussion section of the Vienna Philharmonic and premiered as part of the intermission film of the New Year’s Concert 2025.
While remaining faithful to the character and form of the original, the version embraces the theatrical and sonorous possibilities of a large percussion setup, resulting in a highly effective and visually engaging concert piece.
